Volcanoes Safaris Kyambura Gorge Lodge
The Gorge is almost at the geographical centre of the Greater Virunga Landscape, at the heart of the Albertine Rift that straddles Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC. This landscape is one of the most important areas for avian, primate and wildlife biodiversity in Africa. The original Volcanoes site for the lodge, adjoining the Gorge, was about 25 acres. We have since increased it to about 60 acres in order to protect the neighbouring areas of the Gorge and create a buffer zone.

Room Description
Eight private bandas with private bathrooms and hot water heated by solar energy. Room rates include a complimentary massage and alcoholic beverages.Activities at the Lodge
- Kyambura Gorge Women's Cooperative – visit the coffee plantation and processing plant sponsored by the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust.
- Empundu Playground – visit the local playground provided by the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust. Football and Netball played here daily.
- Visit to a demonstration garden built and run by the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust – used to educate locals on how to plant and harvest vegetables and fruit.
- Other activities at the lodge include: community walks, wetland walks and birding. When on safari with Volcanoes Safaris, the game drives and chimp tracking are also included.
Responsible Travel
US $100 from each Volcanoes Safaris trip goes to the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust. This trust has helped the local community through the following activities:
- Kyambura Gorge Women's Cooperative – coffee plantation and processing plant sponsored by the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust. This offers woman the opportunity to grow and harvest coffee using VSPT facilities. They have access to over 1000 coffee trees and a processing station. The VSPT buys coffee from the women as a way to support their co-op.
- Empundu Playground – local playground provided by the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust.
- Demonstration garden built and run by the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust – used to educate locals on how to plant and harvest vegetables and fruit sustainably and use organic pesticides.
- The Omumashaka Community Performance Group – consists of five tribes who regularly perform educational plays about conservation and AIDS awareness to Volcanoes Safaris clients and the community.
- We have also purchased a site of illegal brickworks which has been converted back to wetland, and are now training local community members to become birding guides.
Sustainable and Green Practices:
- Solar lighting is used throughout the lodge
- We source food from local communities, and teach the communities how to provide for all the nearby lodges.
- We recycle all plastic bottles by using them for storing and selling the coffee made on the land
- The lodge built from mainly local materials
